How do you calculate your grocery or drugstore savings?

I’m curious, how do you calculate your grocery or drugstore savings?

  1. Do you calculate it based on regular retail prices?
  2. Do you calculate it based on sale prices?
  3. How do you calculate it using your reward points /bucks/ rewards?

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while.  We save a lot each year on so many things!  We don’t ever buy toothpaste, razors, and other household products just because I can get it FREE or really cheap.   I know I’m saving a lot because of that but how much am I really saving per trip? What formula do you use?  I plan to find a couple formulas and post them here.

  • Good question!
I’m like you; I know I’m saving a lot and definitely never paying retail on items like toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc. but I don’t know the exact percentage of savings overall. I tend to keep to my weekly/monthly budget, and I usually calculate my savings per shopping trip based on what the receipt states. As you know some stores calculate your total savings including the difference between sale and retail price, and coupons, other stores just count the coupons as savings. It is a little confusing that different stores print different savings calculations on receipts!

  • Will do! I know what you mean about the “bad packaged items” in fact I’m working on a list right now to go to Harris Teeter for double coupons. I’m really excited because they have a lot of organic dairy products that have IP coupons for $1.00/1 which will double! That makes for some cheap and healthy items! Including a half gallon milk after coupon doubled is $1.99!

  • I tried to do this last year, but it drove me crazy. Plus, as far as groceries go I was noticing I was saving a whole lot more on packaged bad for me items than on whole foods like flour, eggs, beans, etc. So, I just gave up on the whole thing and made sure I stuck to my budget. Let us know if you come up with a workable solution.
